Best part of Face Off
One time, Armin’s son came home with bruises and a black eye; he got in a fight. His father rushed to his side, tending the wounds and wanting to know what happened. Apparently the other kids were making fun of his mother; Annie is still shunned by most of the community due to her past actions. He may have been beaten up slightly but the harassers had it worse. Armin is grateful that his son stood up for his mother, however he told him to promise not to get in a fight again. The AruAni son said he couldn’t promise it will happen again but he’ll try.
"You’re just like your mother." *smiles softly at his son*
Her lips were soft. They always were. The salt from harsh tears fell between his lips, burning the cut from the hit.
She used to be gentle with him. Her hands used to brush feather-light against his skin. But she couldn’t do it any longer.
Her coarse blonde hair scratched the palms of his hands. When had it become that way? It used to be soft, silken strands of gold that would slip in between his fingers.
Gold would flutter against the blue sky, as he lied in the grass, watching her look out at the horizon from the wheat fields.
“Annie, it’s late. Shadis can’t find us out here or—,” She cut him off, her finger pressed to his lips, as she shook her head.
“Then let’s not let him find us,” Annie moved her hand away from his lips. Armin could still feel it, as if it had never left.
“Why did you take us out here?”His voice trembled with worry. He never stopped worrying. Annie could sense this, and moved her gaze away from his.
“We’re here. Fighting this war…. Armin? What is so good about humanity?” Her voice wasn’t collected. It felt meek, and unstable. Armin sat up, his hand immediately moving towards hers. She pulled her hand away.
“What do you mean?”
“The world is full of awful people, Armin. We cheat, we steal, we kill, we lie… What good is humanity? We don’t have a purpose for any good intentions. We destroy everything we touch.” She glanced down at her hands before clenching them. “Why are we fighting for something that makes no logical sense to believe in?”
Armin could see now what she was telling him. Broken from her crystal, he held her in his arms as she lay limp. The tears he had felt were not hers, but his own. The hit was not from her hands, but the shards. His last kiss to her had been cold. Yet the one before it, wasn’t much warmer, either.
She was gone. And she took his last bit of warmth with it.
“I love you.”
